 Cafe de Hong Kong
« Thread Started on Dec 4, 2008, 9:45pm »

I came to know about this place from Champagne. She said the food here was good, especially the stewed lamb brisket. Cafe de Hong Kong is located at 586 Balestier Road, #01-01 Eastpac Building (Tel: 6255 3865). Click here for the location map. You can park next to the restaurant but there are limited carpark lots. Alternatively, you can park along Jalan Dusun or the HDB carparks at Blks 101-103 and take a short walk there.

I happened to be around Balestier Road area just now and popped by the cafe for dinner. It is a small and cosy HK style cafe. There is a good selection of food in the menu. We ordered the following dishes (for 2 persons):

Supreme Tofu ($12) - One of their signature dishes, which was very nice

Salt & Pepper Pork ($10) - Nice too

Diced Seafood Fried Rice ($10) - Nice, got wok hei

Almond Paste ($2.50) - Pretty good

cafe de hong kong is one of the best HK style cafe I have tried to date. Will certainly go back again to try their other dishes.

Champagne - Thanks for the good recommendation. You can organise an ieater makan session here liao. ;)

My pleasure, Jeff. You must next try the coffee ribs. Is very different from others as the aroma coffee sauce actually wake you up instantly just like drinking a cup of black neat coffee. Should you like the roast chicken, you have to phone and pre order too. There are many other dishes worth trying. The most exotic one I had tried stewed crocodile plams. The tenderness of the meat is still something you will never forget.

Champagne, will definitely try their roast chicken as I like roast chicken. The coffee ribs sound yummy. The stewed crocodile palms are probably too exotic for me liao (don't want to become a buaya leh :-/)

jems and vVv - The French Toast and Supreme Tofu are worth a try. :)

The next dishes that I want to try are the Roast Chicken, Coffee Ribs and Stewed Lamb Brisket recommended by Champagne, as well as the Steamed Salted Sakura Chicken and Fortune Seafood Roll from the review below:

ijeff, Fortune Seafood roll is like a treasure, It looks like a 'yuan bao' to me, make you feel like biting it to know what the mysterious jems in it. Worth trying. For Steamed salted sakura chicken, i am looking forward to try out too.

Went to cafe de hong kong for lunch just now with a friend.

The Steamed Salted Sakura Chicken was very nice. The meat was tender and yummy.

The Fortune Seafood Roll was also very good and looked great too.

We also tried the Prince Fried Rice (fried with flying fish roe), which was pretty unique. My friend liked it.

I personally preferred the Diced Seafood Fried Rice.

The HK Milk Tea there was good.

cafe de hong kong is now one of my favourite makan place.

I am looking forward to try their Roast Chicken (need one day advance order due to the long preparation time) and Stewed Lamb Brisket next. :)

wah piang, ijeff, your "pamper ourselves once in a while" means 3 times a week? Some more 'hang cheng pai'?

But I must say the food really looks good. Even the Milk Tea seems shiokalicious.

Do you have their number?

Haha, taukwa, so happened to have a few makan appointments in the last week (also eager to try their different dishes :-/). Their telephone number is 6255 3865. You can look for the boss, Francis Mak, who is a friendly chap.

Brought my parents and other family members to cafe de hong kong for dinner tonight (Yes, Taukwa, this was my 4th visit in 8 days :-/).

My main objective today was to try the Roast Chicken and Stewed Lamb Brisket in Claypot. I called Francis this morning to pre-order the Roast Chicken (advanced notice was needed due to the long preparation hours). He asked me whether I was keen to try the Steamed Bamboo Clams with Garlic so that he could reserve some for me, which I was glad that I did.

First, the Roast Chicken ($17), it was the best roast chicken that I have tried to date. The skin was thin and crispy while the meat was tender and juicy. A must try dish!

Next, the Stewed Lamb Brisket in Claypot ($18). It was nice too and went well with the nam yu sauce.

The Steamed Bamboo Clam with Garlic ($35 for 5 pieces) was very good indeed. The clam was fresh and tasted yummy with the garlic.

We also ordered the Mixed Mushrooms with Broccoli ($8.80), which was surprisingly good.

In addition to the above new dishes, I also ordered the following dishes for my parents to try, which were still as good:

Supreme Tofu ($18 for 6 pieces)

Fortune Seafood Roll ($21 for 6 pieces)

Steamed Salted Sakura Chicken ($15)

For desserts, we ordered the Water Chestnut with Lemon ($2.50) and Red Bean Paste ($2), which were pretty good.

Last, but not least, my favourite Hongkong Milk Tea ($1.70):

The paintings on the wall were drawn by the talented Francis junior, who is only 8 years old:

To sum up, it was another enjoyable meal at cafe de hong kong. :)
