 Small roadside durian stalls
« Thread Started on Jun 28, 2008, 1:33am »

This evening, we (indigo, wawa, holydrummer, holybro, holybunny, bashful hunter & partner) had a really wonderful time eating durians at this small roadside durian stall owned by Ah Loon and Ah Teck (2 S'porean gentlemen) who has been in this business for over 20 years. :)

It was nice meeting wawa, and bashful hunter for the first time. :D

We were treated to some superb durians (all agreed that every single one was top quality) and paid decent money ($12 per head) for them. I should have taken the video of holydrummer when he took the XO durian. He literally went "wah lao wah lao wah lao wah lao!" as he walloped the seed. Really threw us off our chairs. Funny sia! ;D

The king of the nite for me was the mao shan wang which was simply superb. I give it a 4.75. Close behind is the D24 and XO which scored 4.5 for me. The golden phoenix gets a credible 4.25 (not because it was not so good but because the others were simply too good). Finally, the D13 gets a 4.00 (It was good too. Remember Holybro praising it a few nites ago?). We missed the Tian Xiang, Di Qiu (Earth) and the Black Pearl. Each durian was distinct from the other. What a treat. We will be looking at organising another bigger durian session in mid July when the best of harvest comes. Tonite was a recce. :)

I will call Ah Loon to contact me when these 3 species come. Must try them all. My good pal StevieG bought Black Pearl last nite from Ah Loon and his mom-in-law told him that it was heavenly.

We ended the session each buying more to bring home for love ones. I bought mao shan wang and D24 back. Wife will surely sayang me tomorrow when she eats them cold. Ok enough talk, here are the pictures:

To me, this mao shan wang was the winner. Bitter, perfect consistency, and bursting with flavour :)

Close-up view. :)

D24. Simply awesome. See the soft dent made by the knifeback to show the texture? Soft and creamy... :)

The XO. This was what made Holydrummer went "wah lao wah lao wah lao wah lao..." :)

Golden Phoenix. Soft, a little wet but so bitter and electrifying. :)

D13. Nice... :)

Wawa holding up what's the legendary chu chi of the XO. Go figure how small seed is. The wallpaper behind is Holydrummer's shirt :)

Satisfied makan kakis :D :D :D

Thank you both, Ah Loon and Ah Teck. :)

sorry folks.. i ran late.....reached the stall at 10.25pm.... minutes after you guys left....

and..... HD and HB&HB were still there downing durians...!!!!

unfortunately there was no more XO left.... as HD was raving about it..(he probably finished the whole lot!)..tried only D24, Golden phoenix and MSW... and skipped the ang hae..

of the 3 for me:
D24 - 3.875
A little too dry, bitterish and not really sweet enough last night. just slightly off the mark from really great D24 usually;. Ah Loon told me that yes - now is not the best time to enjoy D24 which was at the tail end of the first summer harvest... wait till July would be better

Golden phoenix - 4.375
First time i tried. Moist, bitter, wonderful slightly fermented bitter taste. Would have liked it a tad dryer. Also paled slightly in comparison to the MSW. But nevertheless good durian.

MSW - 4.625
The star of the night. Perfect consistency - good balance of moistness and dryness, creamy pasty texture at the back of your mouth when u eat it..small seeded, richly sweet-bitterish, lingering fragrance. near perfect durian.

i just bought 1 of each, enough for 2 persons (HB and HD must have been realy full to decline the durians i offered them...) Looking forward to Black Pearl and Tiang Xiang. TX - AH Loon has described as having a milky creamy flavor to it... one of my favorite durian textures because it really has the aftertaste of drinking milk but with the fragrance of durian!

And Black Pearl - he has described it that on its day, the Best BP beats MSW.

July here i come.

I think we took the best 2 D24 of the nite. The kakis rated them second only to the excellent meow shan wang. At least they stayed open for you, nice of them. Usually close by 10nish.

Les - BP is avaiable next week.. he expects it to be bountiful as the next batch is due on the first week of July......

the best thing about this stall is that AL and AT are so easy to deal with.

PM to arrange...we can do it sometime next week...

All thanks to Catuskit for arranging the great durian feast! When the bill came and Cactuskit said it was $80, HB was ready to fork out $80 from his pocket until he was told it's $80 for all of us! That makes it about $12/pax. Of course it could be that Ah Loon and Ah Teck gave us an informal discount for devt of customer relations but it can't be much even then.

For me, the MaoShanWang was the king that nite and the D24 came in a close second to the XO at no. 3. When HB picked up the D24 the first time, he could almost feel the richness of the flesh and we jokingly said that the richness were causing the calories to go into his body via his fingers!

Will definitely be looking forward to trying the stall again probably this evening with a few of my friends! Understand that WaWa and HB are going there as well this evening. Hope to try the BP this time.

Should there be another impromptu please let me know. Thanks. Cheers!

It was a pleasure meeting you and the rest. :)

What's the price per kg at the Geylang place you ate last nite?

The stall has a sign 49 on it. Well they did not have much variety left. Pricing wise the one i had was 3 for ten dollars. I have already blacklist that stall. As the service was sucks too.

If you have to go to Geylang to eat durian...(not gonna ask why)...go Lor. 17's stall. Not a replacement for the really good durian stalls like Balestier, East Coast Road's, but generally less "hei dian" than the rest.

indigo - the price $12 per head is about right.... the few times i went, for about 4 good durians, the px doesn't come up to more than $50.... and that feeds abt 4 - 5people...

just had excellent durian comparable to the MSW in taste.....

the fruit coming from a wild durian tree in singapore - somewhere in Namly avenue.... the tree is at least 50 yrs old, belongs to noone and is right behind a relative's house. and the taste is highly bitter, strong and fragrant....

4.5/5..

Stopped by the stall at about 10pm to ask Ah Loon Ah TEck to reserve some good durians for a session on Monday nite. Ended up eating 2 Golden Phoenix and 1 Mao Shan Wang just now. Those were the last 3 durians they had. All excellent. Again, the Mao Shan Wang was the best of the 3.

He told me Indigo went earlier with 5-6 paxs. :)
